Excerpt

“He’s a murderer.” Zena took a deep breath. “Look, I know he’s your uncle and you probably have some good recollections with him. I’m sure he was like a father figure to you because your dad was gone. Don’t the facts outweigh the memories? The man is a sociopath. His whole life is a lie. You saw him murder your father, Jacob. What more do you need to convince you that this is justice—delayed—but still justice?”

“You had no right—”

“I not only had the right, but the duty to follow the leads. If I hadn’t followed protocol and done everything by the book, there would have been a federal investigation. Put yourself in my shoes. Would you have told me if the tables were turned?” She paused and lowered her voice. “You’re raw, I get it. I’m sorry we didn’t have a chance to discuss this right after the  arrest. I’ve been tied up with paperwork—you know what that’s like. I’m sorry your uncle murdered your father. I could not have predicted that. The wound of your father’s death never healed—and this forced you to relive that night.”

“Family matters, but maybe it’s different with you. You’re so cold, so matter of fact about your sisters’ deaths. Maybe they didn’t mean as much to you as my father and uncle do—did.”

Angry tears sprang to her eyes.

Review: Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse

Trail of Lightning (The Sixth World, #1)Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was an amazing book that transported me to a different time and realm. A post-apocalyptic story, I would say this is a YA book (or NA, depending on your perspective). Written in first person, present tense, the effects of the story are immediate and impactful. The characters are well-drawn, the dialogue kept me involved, the cultural pieces are well described and explained without lectures, and the needed backstory was artfully dribbled throughout. My one tiny complaint is that the ending was a bit of cliff hanger, so I *must* read the next book to wrap up one story line! No spoilers from me, I give this 5 lightning bolts and highly recommend!

Excerpt:

His heart stuttered and heat flushed his face. “You sure you’re ready to see me—in the daylight?”

She frowned and pursed her lips. “Do I look like someone afraid of taking on a challenge?”

“No. You look like a kick ass heroine named Thunder Heart, and I would be honored and privileged to share your bed.”

“You promised me flying lessons.”

“And you shall have them. Now, where did we leave off?”

She stood, placed her hands on the sides of his chair and leaned in for a long passionate kiss. He closed his eyes and gave her a preview, taking her with him in his memories, soaring over the hotel, and then swirling and swooping down to the river to grab a fat flopping trout in his talons.

She pulled back, breaking the connection, blue eyes wide, her full red lips agape. “Amazing. I want more.”

“Advanced flying lessons require both of us to be naked—and in bed, as close as two people can get.”

Phoebe stood back. “What are you waiting for? Let’s get going.”

He chuckled. “Well, you are my boss. I don’t want anyone to say you coerced me or I forced you. Do we need to put this in writing?” She tilted her head and gave him a puzzled look. “A legal document perhaps? I, Phoebe Wagner, hereby enter into consensual sex freely and without coercion with one Bert Blackfeather…”

She stomped her foot. “Give me your phone.” He handed her his cell.
